How Semrush filters work

Semrush filters let you select domains by Semrush metrics. The block has two panels: Backlinks (Authority Score, link counts, EDU/GOV) and Traffic Analytics (visits, unique visitors, device share, and traffic channels). For each metric you set a range with min and max (a dash appears between them).

Important: At the top of the Semrush filter block there is a hint: “Not every report has this data. Greatly reduces the number of results.” — Semrush data is not available for all reports; strict conditions on these fields narrow results a lot.

Authority Score (AS) filter

Authority Score (AS) is Semrush’s measure of a domain’s overall authority on a scale from 0 to 100 (higher means a stronger domain in Semrush). In the UI you set min and max with allowed values 0–100.

How to use

  1. Open the Semrush filter block in the report’s filter panel
  2. In the Backlinks panel, find the Authority Score (AS) row
  3. In min set the lower bound and in max the upper bound (you can fill only one field or both)

Notes

  • High AS (e.g. 50+) usually means a notable Semrush authority signal; low AS — a weak or new profile
  • Compare AS with other SEO filters and remember that data is not available for every domain

Examples

Example 1: Moderately strong domains 30–60min: 30, max: 60.

Example 2: Only with clear authority from 40min: 40, leave max empty (or 100 if you want an explicit ceiling).

Example 3: Cap “too strong” domains for your use case — min: 0, max: 35.

These rows filter by Semrush backlink count, referring domains, and referring IPs. Each has min and max (0 and above; no hard upper ceiling in the UI).

How to use

  1. Find Backlinks, Referring Domains, or Referring IPs in the Backlinks panel
  2. Enter bounds in min and max (one side or both)

Notes

  • Counts come from Semrush’s backlink index and can differ from Moz, Majestic, or Ahrefs for the same domain
  • Referring IPs help spot link diversity beyond domain count alone

Examples

Example 1: At least 1,000 backlinks — min: 1000, leave max empty.

Example 2: Referring domains 50–500min: 50, max: 500.

Example 3: Referring IPs from 100min: 100.

EDU backlinks and GOV backlinks filter by Semrush counts of links from .edu and .gov (and similar) zones. Same min / max pattern as other count fields.

How to use

  1. Find EDU backlinks or GOV backlinks in the Backlinks panel
  2. Set min, max, or both

Examples

Example 1: Any EDU links — min: 1.

Example 2: At least 5 GOV backlinks — min: 5.

Visits and Unique Visitors

Visits and Unique Visitors select domains by Semrush Traffic Analytics volume. min and max are counts (0 and above).

How to use

  1. Find Visits or Unique Visitors in the Traffic Analytics panel
  2. Enter bounds in min and max

Examples

Example 1: High traffic (from 100,000 visits) — min: 100000, leave max empty.

Example 2: Moderate visits 10,000–100,000min: 10000, max: 100000.

Desktop and Mobile share

Desktop share and Mobile share filter by the share of traffic from desktop or mobile devices. Placeholders are min % / max %; values are 0–100.

How to use

  1. Find Desktop share or Mobile share in Traffic Analytics
  2. Enter percentage bounds (one side or both)

Examples

Example 1: Mostly mobile — Mobile share min %: 60.

Example 2: Desktop-heavy band — Desktop share min %: 40, max %: 80.

Traffic channel filters

Channel rows set absolute visit counts from each Semrush source (not percentage shares like SimilarWeb source filters). Each channel has min and max (0 and above):

  • Direct — direct visits
  • Search Organic — organic search
  • Search Paid — paid search
  • Referral — referral traffic
  • Social — social networks
  • Mail — email / mail traffic

How to use

  1. Find the channel row in Traffic Analytics
  2. Enter count bounds in min and max

Examples

Search Organic: at least 5,000 organic visits — min: 5000.

Direct: 1,000–20,000min: 1000, max: 20000.

Note: Semrush channel filters use counts. SimilarWeb traffic-source filters in Karma.Domains use percent shares — do not mix the two models when reading help or setting ranges.

Combining Semrush filters

You can set several Semrush fields at the same time. Then the domain must meet all specified conditions (AND between different Semrush metrics). Semrush filters can also be combined with the rest of the report filters; useful condition sets can be saved.

If you want one authority / links / traffic threshold across vendors with OR inside the row, see the Combined SEO filter (Semrush participates as AS, backlinks, referring domains, and visits).

Combination example

Goal: Noticeable Semrush authority and organic traffic, without requiring every channel.

In the UI: AS min 25, max 70; Visits min 1000; optionally Search Organic min 500. If results are too thin, relax one condition.

Input formats and field limits

  • Authority Score (AS): min and max, values from 0 to 100 inclusive
  • Desktop / Mobile share: min % and max %, 0–100
  • All other Semrush count fields (backlinks, domains, IPs, EDU/GOV, visits, users, channels): min and max, lower bound not below 0; no hard 100 ceiling

An empty field means that side of the bound is not set; together with the other field filled, that gives a one-sided condition.

Common issues and what to do

No or very few results

Why: The combination of Semrush fields and other filters is too tight; or most reports lack Semrush data (see the block hint).

What to do: Remove or relax Semrush conditions one field at a time until results are enough.

Unclear why a domain is missing

Why: The report may have no Semrush metrics for that domain — then Semrush filters will exclude it.

What to do: Heed the warning at the top of the block. If needed, temporarily turn off Semrush filters and use other signals, or use Combined SEO with multiple providers.

Channel counts look “too large” compared to SimilarWeb %

Why: Semrush channels here are absolute volumes, not shares of 100%.

What to do: Set count thresholds that match Semrush Traffic Analytics scale, not SimilarWeb percentage rules.

Usage tips

  1. Wide first, then tighten: start with one metric (e.g. only AS or only Visits), then add more fields if results allow.

  2. Hint about data: the phrase “Not every report has this data…” refers to Semrush availability in reports; it is the main reason for empty or short lists under strict filters.

  3. AS vs traffic: AS is authority; visits and channels are Traffic Analytics — different tasks care about different panels.

  4. EDU / GOV: use when educational or governmental link signals matter for your niche.

  5. Saving presets: stable combinations are handy to save so you do not re-enter ranges every time.
