How Nameshift auctions work

Nameshift runs timed domain auctions on its escrow marketplace, with a focus on European TLDs alongside broader inventory. Public site copy puts the catalog on the order of 500,000+ searchable names and more than 1.5 million offered overall (approximate).

Auction flow in short:

• Free auction. No upfront seller fee and no reserve. Highest bid wins when the clock ends (including overtime).

• Paid auction. Seller pays $15 to start and may set a reserve. If the reserve is not met, there is no sale.

• Opening interest. Sellers can seed an auction from an existing offer so bidding starts from that amount.

• Overtime. A bid in the last 5 minutes adds 3 minutes. Further late bids keep restarting that window.

• Escrow close. Buyer pays Nameshift; seller gets transfer instructions after funds are secured; seller is paid after transfer succeeds. Failed transfer returns a full refund to the buyer.

• Seller auction commission. 15% of the final sale price on a successful auction.

Buy Now, Make Offer, and Lease Before Own

Buy Now

Purchase at the listed price. Escrow and transfer assistance are free for buyers; the seller pays marketplace commission (commonly about 10% with Nameshift nameservers, 13% without, or 5% when bringing an existing buyer).

Make Offer

Submit an offer; the seller can accept or counter. Agreed deals settle through the same escrow transfer flow.

Lease Before Own

Available when the seller enables it on a Buy Now listing of at least about €200 (or equivalent). Terms run 2 to 60 months. The domain stays in escrow while the buyer can update DNS. Admin markup by term length: 5% (2-12 months), 10% (13-24), 20% (25-36), 30% (37-60), split between owner and marketplace. Seven consecutive business days without payment ends the contract with no reimbursement.

Fees and currencies

• Buyer escrow / transfer fee on standard purchases: none beyond the purchase price (VAT invoice available where applicable).

• Auction seller commission: 15% of the final winning price.

• Buy Now seller commission: typically 10% / 13% / 5% depending on nameserver and bring-your-own-buyer setup (see sellers page).

• Currencies: EUR, USD, GBP. Auction API lots often show EUR minimums (frequently from about €10 on live samples).

• Payments: bank transfer, cards, iDEAL, MisterCash, Sofort, SEPA, and related EU methods.
