How Porkbun auctions work

Porkbun runs timed domain auctions on porkbun.com/auctions. Inventory includes registrar Expired Auctions and user-listed names. Auctions run through Dynadot's DAX network, which can put the same lot in front of bidders at other participating registrars.

Auction flow in short:

• Eligibility. Verified email and phone, a card on file, and a recent $5+ order (or pre-fund). Optional deposit on some accounts or lots.

• Proxy maximums. Bid above current price plus increment; the system raises only as needed up to your ceiling.

• Overtime. A bid in the last 5 minutes adds 5 minutes. Late bids keep extending the close.

• 24-hour pay. Winner owes the final bid plus transfer/renewal fees. Auto-charge or payment link; runner-up path if payment fails.

• Account delivery. Names already at Porkbun move into the winner's account after payment. Off-Porkbun names transfer in first, then move to the account.

Expired Auctions vs user auctions

Expired Auctions

These lots sit on Porkbun's expired / grace path. After payment, Porkbun either renews the domain before delivery or updates expiry so registry auto-renew can apply. Once a name receives an auction bid in the broader expire flow, the prior registrant typically loses the ability to renew it back.

Separate from on-site auctions: around day 21 of the renewal grace period, some expired Porkbun names may also be queued to third-party auction venues (often GoDaddy or Dynadot, depending on TLD). That inventory is outside this table; this page covers lots shown on Porkbun's own auction feed.

User-listed auctions

Registrants list Porkbun-hosted domains with a minimum bid and schedule. While a name is listed, outbound transfers are blocked and pending transfers are cancelled. Auctions with bids cannot be cancelled early. Seller commission is 15% of the winning bid (85% to the seller). Payouts go through PayPal on verified sales that are at least 15 days old.

Transfer and renewal notes

• Expired Auction wins: renewal handling as above before or at account move.

• Other auction types: no automatic renewal; the winner renews if needed.

• Outbound lock: up to 60 days after the domain lands in the account.

• TLD quirks: some endings do not renew on transfer; check registry rules before bidding high.

Marketplace Buy Now

The same registrar also runs a fixed-price Marketplace (porkbun.com/marketplace). Purchase moves the domain into the buyer's account immediately. Seller Marketplace commission is commonly about 7%, with no separate listing fee beyond commission on a completed sale.

Fees and payment timing

• Buyer auction invoice: winning bid + any transfer and renewal fees due within 24 hours.

• User auction seller commission: 15% of the final winning bid.

• Deposit risk: unpaid wins can forfeit a required deposit; runner-up may get the next offer.

• Cancellations: Porkbun may cancel auctions (including after payment) for transfer failure, fraud, or related reasons, with a full refund if payment already cleared.
